Despite having a standing army of more than 1 million people, North Korean soldiers do not have adequate weapons, equipment and training like the US or South Korea.

Only about 40 km from the demilitarized zone (DMZ), South Korea’s capital Seoul is an ideal target for shelling from North Korea.

Prominent among the artillery types in Pyongyang’s service is the M1978 Koksan.

The K9 has built-in computer control and automation technology, but this could be overwhelmed by the range of North Korean artillery.

In addition to the M1978 Koksan, North Korea also operates many other types of artillery, including thousands of towed artillery batteries and self-propelled artillery with calibers from 120 mm to 152 mm.

The most terrifying element of North Korean artillery lies in the multiple launch rocket system (MLRS).

Although not as accurate as conventional artillery, MLRS is very effective when attacking targets on a large scale, shocking the enemy.

Not only possessing powerful weapons, North Korean artillery has demonstrated high combat readiness through many exercises, as well as clashes between the two Koreas, such as the artillery battle on Yeonpyeong Island in 2010.

During this event, North Korean rocket artillery bombarded South Korean military positions with 108 shells, while 6 South Korean K9 artillery guns could not fire back effectively.
