Bartomeu left the chair of Barca president after five years.
When Jordi Farre, a member who openly and persistently opposed Bartomeu, launched a journey to collect signatures from members to overthrow this incompetent president, few people believed he would succeed.
Barca has over 120,000 members, and the opposition’s task is to collect at least 16,520 signatures of support, to initiate a vote of no confidence.
History shows that the journey to overthrow incumbent presidents always takes a lot of effort.
However, Farre’s camp collected 20,687 signatures – a number that far exceeded expectations.
According to the correct process, after collecting that many supporting signatures, Farre’s group will go to the next step which is to organize a vote of no confidence.
Jordi Farre (center) and members of the movement to overthrow Bartomeu submitted signatures of support.
But before that, they also have to pass the process of verifying the validity of the signatures, with the participation of Barca’s Board of Directors.
At this stage, Bartomeu and his staff can still find many reasons to delay the opposition’s progress.
The opposition wants to depose Bartomeu as soon as possible, because they fear that if they wait until the election of a new president in March 2021, Bartomeu will make other disastrous decisions, further affecting the situation.
What Farre feared did not happen.
It was a shocking decision.
Bartomeu announced his resignation on October 27, after a 45-minute press conference.
Taking over as Barca president in January 2014, replacing Sandro Rosell, who suddenly resigned due to the Neymar transfer scandal, Bartomeu brought home 13 titles of all kinds, including four La Liga and one Champions League.
A new executive board will be a necessary condition for Messi to give up the idea of leaving, and even agree to stay with Barca until the end of his career, with the hope of winning many more titles.
It will also have another consequence, which is that trust in the Board of Directors will improve immediately, for the simple reason that Bartomeu is no longer sitting there.
Carlos Tusquets, currently working in Barca’s Finance Department, was appointed interim President to replace Bartomeu.
Tusquets will act temporarily until the election of a new President is held.
Tusquets will temporarily run Barca until the club elects a new president in March 2021.
In this situation, it is almost certain that Barca will not spend heavily to strengthen its forces in January 2021.
Given that situation, it is likely that Tusquets will call for an early election, expected at the end of January 2021, or even earlier, so that Barca can quickly stabilize operations, especially preparing for transition periods.
A new, supposedly better life awaits them after Bartomeu leaves his seat.
